apocalyptic context. μακάριος is closely linked with the promise in the third part, which enumerates the blessing, and so it is best to translate “God blesses.”27 Those singularly blessed are “the poor in spirit” (οἱ πτωχοὶ τῷ πνεύματι, cf. Luke 6:20, “the poor”), with “in spirit” (τῷ πνεύματι) a dative of sphere, indicating the realm in which the person is “poor.”28 This is not a spiritualized form of the Lukan original but closely connected, with both going back to Jesus’ original saying.
